Before the TrueBrow™ System we were working with ONLY 2-dimensional brow theory and techniques. Two-dimensional brow theory and techniques aren’t bad, they are limiting.

Two-dimensional brow theory and techniques capture both length and width but lack depth and the element of time. They don’t see the brow holistically.

Some key characteristics of 2D are:

• It has length and width, represented by the x and y axes, with no z axis for depth or temporal evolution.
• Techniques address both the length and the width of the brow, but ignore the depth of strokes and the lifecycle of the brow hairs.
• The workspace setup accommodates movements along the length and width, but the professional’s position and light source have no impact on the perceived depth.
• While the brow’s arch and alignment with facial features are considered, there is no emphasis on texture, color gradations, or the eyebrow’s changing nature over time.

A perfect example of a 2D brow technique is brow mapping, stencils, and textbook guidelines.

Let’s look at just one: brow mapping.

Brow mapping is a technique used to define the shape of a brow according to specific guidelines and rules. Professionals use it to determine the shape before proceeding with microblading, other PMU techniques, brow lamination, and skin staining. It has become the go-to technique to create a brow shape.

The outcomes of all the above are 2D for the client’s brows. As we mentioned earlier, they are not bad; however, I will leave it up to you to decide whether limiting your clients’ brows is good enough for you.

Limitations cause friction, frustration, and feelings of not being good enough. We know what it feels like to experience limitations in our work. However, we often put up with these feelings because we are unaware of a better way. 

Rules may offer some guidance, but ultimately they imprison your creativity and your ability to help women beyond your wildest dreams. Even though it is a safe space, you are bound to it. You may not even realize you are within a paradigm that keeps out your potential when working with 2D brow theory and techniques. More importantly, you might be missing the potential of what is possible for another’s face via their brow.

Let’s look at 2D in layman’s terms.

Imagine you’re drawing a house on a flat sheet of paper. You outline the basic shape – a square for the body, a triangle for the roof, rectangles for doors and windows. This simple sketch gives you a general idea of a house, but it lacks depth and detail. It doesn’t capture the texture of the bricks, the depth of the windows, the play of light and shadow, or how the house sits in its environment. In essence, it’s a flat, basic representation.

Similarly, two-dimensional brow techniques, such as brow mapping, provide a foundational understanding. They offer a basic framework for shaping and styling brows, akin to drawing straight lines to mark where the brow starts, arches, and ends. However, just like the sketch, they don’t fully capture the intricacies of each unique brow.

In real life, brows are more than just lines and angles. They have depth, texture, and unique characteristics that vary from person to person. Two-dimensional techniques often overlook these subtleties. They don’t account for the natural curve of the brow bone, the varying densities of hair growth, or time.

By relying solely on these basic techniques, one might achieve a standard shape, but miss out on creating a brow that can reach the height of its beauty, its fullness. Just as a simple sketch doesn’t do justice to a real house, two-dimensional brow mapping can fall short in capturing the true essence and potential of a person’s natural brows.
